Discovery & Context
4QMMT — Miqsat Ma'ase ha-Torah, 'Some of the Works of the Torah' — was discovered in Cave 4 at Qumran among the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is a sectarian halakhic letter, dating from roughly the mid-second century BC, composed by the leadership of the Qumran community and addressed (most scholars judge) to a Hasmonean priest-king in Jerusalem. Six fragmentary manuscripts (4Q394–399) preserve it. The text is not Scripture for the Nazarene Faith — our canon is the 66 books — but it is a priceless primary-source window into Second Temple halakhic debate, and its vocabulary reshapes how we read the apostle Paul.
4QMMT is a pre-Christian Jewish letter, preserved in Hebrew, that uses the exact phrase Paul later writes in Greek: 'works of the law.' Reading Paul without 4QMMT is like reading a legal brief without knowing the court's docket.
